Baby Boomer...that's my label. For some it's a label for "old"...for other's it's a label akin to General or President or even "Mr. or Mrs." in this age of first name use. Baby Boomers...a time.
A dawning of time for people who were born during World War II to people who were tired of war and hoped for something better when it ended. The birth of a generation of hope. A generation that was lead into another war that was a catalyst for sadness and sent a nation into turmoil over the loss of so many more baby boomer lives. Had they lived, the statistics for baby boomers would be even greater. We miss them all and can be proud that they did what their country called them to do, however controversial it would become...all wars have an ugly that we just can't stand to see.
The beginning of instant news that gave the world a view into all of the catastrophes that we had been insulated from in previous times. We saw the launching into space, the landing on the moon, the assassination of a President, the pictures from war as it happened...the age of innocence lost.
The burning of the bra that has lead to an awakening that women are more than just an article of clothing and more than a man's possession. We are woman - hear us roar - in numbers too big to ignore (thank you Helen).
We were a generation that wasn't going to stand by and allow the segregation of our societies and sought to end the bigotry and prejudice. It started with violence from man's ignorance and erupted into a loving embrace that is taking too long to erase the ugly actions of people consumed by hate. We should all hold onto Martin Luther King's dream of all of our children living in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. We should all want that dream.
It was a time of an expression of free love...but that will be another writing...for another day...I am a baby boomer - I have a lot to say...on another day.
